This bill establishes a Veterans Scam and Fraud Evasion Officer within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This new officer will be responsible for developing fraud and scam prevention, reporting, and incident response plans, serving as a central point of contact to direct veterans to relevant resources. The VSAFE Officer's duties include providing comprehensive communication to VA employees and veterans during fraud incidents, establishing consistent guidance on identifying and avoiding scams, and promoting the VSAFE Fraud Hotline and website. The officer will also monitor fraud metrics to enable data analytics and proactive trend identification, and develop training for VA employees handling fraud inquiries. Furthermore, the officer is tasked with coordinating efforts with the VA Inspector General and various federal agencies, such as the Department of Justice and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, to foster a whole-of-government approach to fraud prevention. This coordination aims to improve prevention efforts, identify proper reporting avenues for veterans, and consult with veterans service organizations and government entities to enhance understanding of potential risks. The bill also includes a minor amendment to extend certain limits on pension payments from November 30, 2031, to January 30, 2032.
