Tropical Plant Health Initiative Act

The "Tropical Plant Health Initiative Act" proposes to amend the Food, Agriculture, Conservation, and Trade Act of 1990 by establishing a new grant program. This initiative would fund research and extension activities focused on developing and disseminating science-based tools and treatments to combat plant pests and noxious weeds impacting tropical plants. The grants would support efforts to address threats to a wide range of tropical crops, including coffee, macadamia, cacao, plantains, bananas, mangos, floriculture, and vanilla plants . Key activities include establishing areawide integrated pest management programs , surveying plant health, and investigating the biology, immunology, ecology, genomics, and bioinformatics of these plants. Furthermore, the bill authorizes research into factors affecting the immune systems of tropical plants and other serious threats they face. It also extends the authorization of appropriations for these grant programs until 2030 , ensuring continued funding for tropical plant health initiatives.
