This legislation empowers the Secretary of Homeland Security or the Attorney General to deputize State or local law enforcement officers . These officers would be authorized to employ drone countermeasures to safeguard specific locations and events from unauthorized unmanned aircraft systems. The authority is strictly limited to protecting sites with existing flight restrictions, locations of eligible large public gatherings, or other public gatherings under temporary flight restrictions as determined by the Federal Aviation Administration. To be deputized, officers must complete specialized training specified by the Secretary or Attorney General in coordination with the Department of Transportation and the FAA. Furthermore, the bill mandates federal oversight of this authority's use by deputized officers and requires that all authorized equipment for drone detection and countermeasures be included on a Department-maintained list, coordinated with relevant federal agencies.
