This bill proposes the establishment of the Office of Gun Violence Prevention within the Office of Legal Policy of the Department of Justice, to be led by a Director appointed by the Attorney General. The Office's primary duty is to coordinate, integrate, and maximize the efficacy of all responsibilities, programs, and services related to gun violence prevention administered by the Attorney General, aiming for an integrated approach to reducing gun violence and supporting victims. This includes overseeing various divisions and offices within the Department of Justice and the administration of the national instant criminal background check system. The Director, in consultation with an Advisory Council , will evaluate existing laws, regulations, federal programs, and data sources to assess how they can be maximized and modernized to reduce gun violence. The Office is also tasked with recommending legislative and executive policy options to promote evidence-based gun violence prevention strategies and identifying data gaps for research and policy development. Furthermore, it will educate the public on federal laws and programs, including secure firearm storage and suicide prevention, and assist communities with crisis response activities following gun violence incidents. The bill mandates an annual report to Congress on the state of gun violence and policy recommendations.
