Local Input Act

The "Local Input Act" mandates that the Secretary of the Interior engage in meaningful involvement with the public and State, Tribal, and local government officials before making decisions on offering parcels of land for oil or gas leasing.

This involvement requires several minimum steps, including public disclosure of the leasing proposal and a detailed analysis of its expected effects on both surface and subsurface resources, as well as other existing land uses.

Furthermore, the bill ensures an opportunity for public comment on the proposal.

The Secretary must then consider all input received from the public, State and local governments, and through government-to-government consultations with federally recognized Indian Tribes.

Crucially, based on this comprehensive involvement and feedback, the Secretary of the Interior is empowered to decide not to offer a particular parcel for oil or gas leasing.
