The bill mandates the Secretary of Health and Human Services to establish the Working Group on Unifying Loneliness Research . This group is tasked with formulating recommendations for standardizing the measurements of loneliness, defined as a subjective feeling of being isolated, and isolation, which is the objective lack of social relationships. The primary goal is to enhance the consistency and reliability of data related to these critical public health concerns. The recommendations will focus on fostering collaboration among federal departments and agencies to develop standardized measurements for use in public and private research, including surveys across diverse populations. This standardization aims to guide strategic decision-making and evaluate strategies to combat loneliness and isolation, while also providing consistent measurement tools for healthcare. Furthermore, the group will work on standardized definitions of loneliness, isolation, and related terms for public education and awareness. The Working Group will comprise senior-level representatives from various federal entities, including the Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, CDC, NIH, and others deemed beneficial by the Secretary. It will also include representatives from six states, specifically those with the highest and lowest numbers of practitioners needed to address mental health professional shortage areas. This diverse composition ensures a broad perspective on the issue. The Working Group is required to submit a report detailing its work and recommendations to specific Congressional committees within one year of the bill's enactment, making the report publicly available online. The group must meet at least three times before submitting its report. This section of the Act is set to cease effectiveness at the end of calendar year 2027.
