The Telehealth Response for E-prescribing Addiction Therapy Services Act, or TREATS Act , aims to enhance access to substance use disorder treatment by modifying the Controlled Substances Act. This legislation specifically allows for a telehealth evaluation to satisfy the initial medical evaluation requirement for prescribing certain controlled substances. Under the bill, practitioners can use telehealth to prescribe Schedule III, IV, or V controlled substances that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treating substance use disorder. A "telehealth evaluation" is defined as a remote medical assessment conducted by a practitioner using a two-way, real-time interactive telecommunications system, which can include both audio-only or audio and video communication, in compliance with all applicable laws.
