The Telehealth Response for E-prescribing Addiction Therapy Services Act, or TREATS Act, aims to expand access to substance use disorder treatment by modifying the Controlled Substances Act. This legislation introduces the option for a telehealth evaluation as an alternative to an in-person medical evaluation for prescribing certain controlled substances. Specifically, for Schedule III, IV, or V controlled substances approved by the Food and Drug Administration for substance use disorder treatment, a telehealth evaluation can now fulfill the initial assessment requirement. The bill defines a telehealth evaluation as a real-time, two-way interactive medical assessment conducted remotely by a practitioner using audio-only or audio and video telecommunications, adhering to all applicable Federal and State laws.
Referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, and in addition to the Committee on the Judiciary, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
