Francis G. Newlands Memorial Removal Act

This legislation, titled the "Francis G. Newlands Memorial Removal Act," mandates the Secretary of the Interior to remove or permanently conceal all instances of Francis Newlands' name from the memorial fountain located at Chevy Chase Circle in the District of Columbia. The bill aims to address the presence of his name on this public monument. The Secretary is specifically directed to remove a brass plaque , a stone, tablet-like projection , and the carved name "Newlands" from the fountain's coping stones. Following removal, these items must be offered to the descendants of Francis Griffith Newlands for 60 days. If unclaimed, they will be maintained by the National Park Service as Federal property and accessioned into the Rock Creek Park museum collection.
