The Holocaust Education and Antisemitism Lessons Act directs the Director of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to undertake a comprehensive study on Holocaust education. This study will examine efforts in all States , a nationally representative sample of local educational agencies , and a representative sample of public elementary and secondary schools . The goal is to understand the current landscape of Holocaust education across the nation. The study will determine whether Holocaust education is required or optional in curricula and assess the implementation of related standards. It will investigate the existence of centralized resources, professional development opportunities for teachers, and the involvement of informal educational organizations like museums. Furthermore, it aims to identify challenges, resource needs, and the adoption of United States Holocaust Memorial Museum materials. The Director will also analyze the intended outcomes of Holocaust education units and the teaching methods that successfully achieve these outcomes. This includes examining various approaches such as in-class discussions, experiential learning, and project-based learning , ensuring they are developmentally appropriate and trauma-informed. The study will also identify the types of instructional materials used, including primary sources, and assess how schools evaluate students' knowledge of the Holocaust and their ability to identify antisemitism, bigotry, hate, and genocide. Upon completion of the study, the Director must submit a detailed report to Congress within a specified timeframe. The bill defines "Holocaust education" broadly to encompass improving awareness, understanding lessons for preventing genocide and hate, and studying the history and evolving nature of antisemitism.
