This bill aims to elevate the importance of school safety by amending the National Security Act of 1947 to explicitly include school security as a component of the National Security Strategy. This ensures that strategies and capabilities for safeguarding elementary schools, secondary schools, and institutions of higher education are considered at the highest level of national planning. Furthermore, the legislation directs the Secretary of Education and the Secretary of Homeland Security to undertake a comprehensive assessment of threats facing schools across the United States. This assessment requires consultation with the chief executive of each state to gather broad input. A joint report detailing the assessment's results must then be submitted to relevant congressional committees and leadership within 180 days of the bill's enactment.
