This bill, titled the "Supporting American Wood and Mill Infrastructure with Loans for Longevity Act" or the "SAWMILL Act" , establishes requirements for the Timber Production Expansion Guaranteed Loan Program. It mandates that the Secretary of Agriculture, in coordination with the Secretary of the Interior, identify federal lands that are high or very high priority for ecological restoration involving vegetation removal. The Program will provide loan guarantees to eligible entities, defined as individuals or businesses owning or operating sawmills or other wood-processing facilities in rural areas. These facilities must be located within a 250-mile radius of the identified eligible federal land. The purpose of these guarantees is to support the establishment, reopening, retrofitting, expansion, or improvement of such facilities, thereby substantially decreasing the cost of ecological restoration projects. A total of not more than $220,000,000 in loan guarantees may be provided under the Program.
Referred to the Committee on Agriculture, and in addition to the Committee on Natural Resources, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
