This bill proposes to amend title VII of the Social Security Act, establishing a single point of contact at the Social Security Administration (SSA) for individuals who are victims of identity theft. This provision applies to those whose Social Security account numbers have been misused, affecting their records or prompting a request for a new number. The designated contact will be responsible for tracking the individual's case through to completion and coordinating with various SSA units to ensure swift resolution. The single point of contact will consist of a team of specially trained employees , accountable for the case until its resolution and capable of coordinating across departments. Procedures will be put in place to guarantee continuity of records and case history, even if team members change, and to notify the individual appropriately. The amendments are slated to take effect 180 days after the bill's enactment.
