This bill, titled the "Imported Seafood Safety Standards Act," establishes the Inspection and Consumption of Shrimp and Shrimp Products Fund within the Treasury. The Fund will receive 70 percent of duties collected on imported shrimp and shrimp products, including countervailing and antidumping duties, starting in fiscal year 2026. These funds are intended to enhance food safety and promote the domestic shrimp market. Amounts in the Fund are divided equally: 50 percent will go to the Secretary of Health and Human Services , acting through the Commissioner of Food and Drugs. These funds will be used for inspecting, examining, and testing shrimp for antibiotic residues, conducting seafood importer inspections, and coordinating with other agencies to prevent imports from forced labor or illegal sources. The remaining 50 percent will be allocated to the Secretary of Agriculture to encourage the domestic consumption of shrimp, supplementing existing federal funding for such purchases.
Referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, and in addition to the Committee on Agriculture, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
