The "Promoting Precision Agriculture Act" aims to significantly enhance the adoption and participation of precision agriculture across the United States, promoting innovation and efficiency in farming. It also seeks to establish U.S. leadership in developing voluntary consensus standards for this sector. The bill directs the Secretary of Agriculture, in consultation with the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Federal Communications Commission, to develop voluntary, consensus-based, and private sector-led interconnectivity standards and best practices for precision agriculture within two years. These standards are designed to promote economies of scale and ease the burden of technology adoption, considering evolving demands, connectivity needs, and critical cybersecurity challenges , alongside the impact of advanced wireless communications and artificial intelligence. Additionally, the legislation mandates the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to conduct regular studies, starting one year after the standards are developed, to assess their voluntariness, industry coordination, and success in encouraging precision agriculture adoption. The GAO will then report its findings to relevant congressional committees.
