RECOVER PII Act

This bill aims to significantly enhance and extend identity protection for individuals whose personally identifiable information was compromised during data breaches at federal agencies. It amends existing law to make identity protection coverage effective for the remainder of the life of the affected individual , moving beyond previous fiscal year limitations. Furthermore, the bill mandates that this coverage must include at least $5,000,000 in identity theft insurance , providing a substantial increase in financial protection for victims. Beyond extending identity protection, the legislation also addresses proactive measures for safeguarding personal information. It authorizes federal agencies to use funds appropriated for salaries and expenses to reimburse employees and contractors for up to 100 percent of the costs incurred for privacy-enhancing services . These services include software, hardware, or other technological means designed to mitigate privacy risks by eliminating, reducing, or suppressing personal information, thereby offering a mechanism for individuals to better protect their data.
