NIH Mentorship Modernization Act

The "NIH Mentorship Modernization Act" aims to significantly improve mentorship and career development support for early-career researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services to establish minimum mentorship standards and support requirements for entities receiving NIH career development, institutional training, and other research training awards. These standards are intended to build upon existing requirements, avoid administrative duplication, and provide flexibility for institutions already possessing robust mentorship programs. The mandated standards will include measurable expectations for regular mentor-mentee engagement , professional development, periodic assessment of mentee progress, and minimum qualifications for mentors. The bill also encourages the dissemination of evidence-based mentorship practices , such as mentoring compacts and individualized development plans, and allows for supplemental funding to institutions to assist with implementation. These provisions will apply to new awards made two years after enactment, with the Secretary periodically reviewing and updating mentorship practices to reflect current evidence.
