The Directorate's responsibilities encompass managing the United States Antarctic Program to maintain an active U.S. presence and supporting the Antarctic Treaty. It will also maintain an influential presence in the Arctic, facilitate engagement with local and indigenous peoples in research, and chair the Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee. Key activities involve supporting creative research, developing and sustaining Arctic infrastructure , providing operational and logistical support for Antarctic science, and ensuring polar region safety and health. An Assistant Director will manage the Directorate, coordinating efforts across federal agencies and international partners, while an advisory committee will provide recommendations. The bill aims to strengthen U.S. leadership and strategic interests in both polar regions through targeted investments and research.
