PFAS Alternatives Act

This bill aims to significantly improve firefighter safety by accelerating the development of next-generation, PFAS-free turnout gear . It establishes a grant program, administered by the Secretary of Health and Human Services through the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, to fund eligible entities for research, development, and testing of these safer materials. The grant program prioritizes innovations that offer enhanced protection against hazardous exposures, reduce maintenance needs through contamination resistance or easier cleaning, and consider diverse body compositions in design. Applicants must demonstrate partnerships with firefighting organizations to ensure research findings are effectively translated into practice. Furthermore, the bill authorizes a separate grant program to develop and disseminate crucial training and guidance for firefighters on best practices for safely wearing, decontaminating, and caring for the newly developed turnout gear. These initiatives are supported by authorized appropriations of $25 million annually for research and $2 million annually for training over several fiscal years, with a required report to Congress on progress.
