SNAP Tribal Food Sovereignty Act of 2026

This legislation amends the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act, authorizing the Secretary of Agriculture to enter into self-determination contracts with Indian Tribes and Tribal organizations. These contracts would empower Tribes to plan, conduct, and administer various functions, services, or activities related to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for their communities. The agreements will adhere to the same terms, conditions, procedures, regulations, and requirements as other self-determination contracts under the Act, with the Department of Agriculture acting as the appropriate agency. The bill also mandates the Office of Self-Governance of the Bureau of Indian Affairs to provide essential technical assistance to both the Secretary of Agriculture and any Indian Tribes or Tribal organizations requesting support for these new self-determination contracts, thereby facilitating tribal control over food assistance programs.
