This bill aims to significantly enhance the safety and security of United States Postal Service employees and mail by authorizing substantial funding for infrastructure upgrades. It allocates $1.4 billion annually from fiscal years 2025 through 2029 for the installation of high-security collection boxes and the replacement of older "arrow keys" with electronic versions. To improve accountability, the legislation mandates the Attorney General to appoint an Assistant United States Attorney in each judicial district, responsible for coordinating the investigation and prosecution of offenses against the USPS, including mail theft and assaults on carriers. Additionally, it requires the United States Sentencing Commission to amend its guidelines. This amendment will ensure that the assault or robbery of a postal employee is treated with the same severity as an assault on a law enforcement officer, thereby strengthening penalties for such crimes.
