The study will identify obstacles to securing affordable housing, pinpoint geographic areas of unaffordability, and list federal housing programs currently inaccessible to this income group. A key objective is to recommend clear income and other parameters to establish a consistent federal definition for "workforce housing," which would be used to describe housing segments made available to middle-income households within federal housing programs. Furthermore, the GAO will analyze how to modify existing federal housing programs or develop new incentives to effectively include "workforce housing," contingent on the availability of appropriate funding. This initiative aims to provide Congress with actionable recommendations to improve housing accessibility and affordability for America's middle class.
