This bill establishes the Julius Rosenwald and Rosenwald Schools National Historical Park as a new unit of the National Park System. The park aims to commemorate the life and legacy of Julius Rosenwald, a visionary philanthropist and former head of Sears, Roebuck and Co., who partnered with Booker T. Washington to build approximately 5,000 schools for African American children in the segregated South. These Rosenwald Schools , constructed between 1912 and 1932, educated over 600,000 students and significantly improved African American educational opportunities, fostering future civil rights leaders. The park will include representative Rosenwald School sites, such as the San Domingo School in Maryland, the Saint George Rosenwald School in South Carolina, and the Woodville Rosenwald School in Virginia. A headquarters and visitor center will be established within or near the former Sears Merchandising Complex in Chicago, Illinois, to interpret Rosenwald's life and the schools' impact. Additionally, the bill mandates the creation of a Rosenwald Schools National Network within the National Park Service to connect and disseminate the story of remaining Rosenwald Schools nationwide through educational materials, research, and grants, ensuring their historical significance is widely recognized and preserved.
