This legislation, known as the Department of Defense PFAS Discharge Prevention Act, requires the Secretary of Defense to seek specific modifications to stormwater discharge permits at military facilities. Within one year of enactment, the Secretary must request that permits issued under the Federal Water Pollution Control Act be updated to include new requirements. These modifications must mandate quarterly monitoring of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) discharges and the implementation of appropriate best management practices or control technologies to reduce them. An exception applies if a permit already contains these provisions, and at least one percent of annual Department of Defense PFAS remediation funds must be dedicated to these monitoring and discharge reduction activities.
