This legislation, known as the "Mission to MARS Act," appropriates $1,000,000,000 to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for critical infrastructure upgrades and modernization at the Johnson Space Center , with funds available until September 30, 2034. The bill targets a wide array of projects, including preparing the Neutral Buoyancy Lab for commercial and lunar training, upgrading the Astromaterials Curation and Research facility , and modernizing the Mission Control Center for missions beyond low-Earth orbit. Significant investments are also directed towards improving astronaut flight training facilities, electrical systems, HVAC, and various building repairs, alongside the modernization of the space food systems laboratory and asbestos mitigation. Additionally, funds will support upgrades to the space environment simulation laboratory and the repair or refurbishment of astronaut training and cargo transportation aircraft. Any remaining funds will be used to further enhance facilities for developing advanced spacesuits, hardware, and simulations for future missions to low-Earth orbit, the Moon, and Mars, supporting both NASA and commercial entities.
