This bill amends Title 18 of the United States Code to significantly increase penalties for crimes committed against law enforcement officers. It establishes a minimum sentence of not less than 20 years imprisonment for assaults resulting in serious injury against Federal, State, or local law enforcement officers. For State and local officers, these assault provisions apply if the act involves an instrument or weapon that has traveled in interstate commerce. Additionally, the bill mandates that the murder of a law enforcement officer, whether Federal or State/local (under similar interstate commerce conditions), be sentenced as first-degree murder . The Attorney General is also required to submit a report within three years on the prosecutions conducted as a result of these new provisions.
