This bill amends the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 by establishing a new grant program called the Make America Safe Again Grant Program . Administered by the Attorney General, this program will award grants to eligible entities, defined as State, local, or Indian Tribe agencies authorized to engage in law enforcement activities. The primary purpose of these grants is to enhance public safety through various law enforcement initiatives. Grant funds can be utilized for several key objectives, including the hiring and retention of law enforcement officers, potentially through bonuses. The program also targets specific criminal activities such as combating vehicle thefts, including carjackings, and preventing violent crime by prioritizing stringent sentences for repeat and juvenile offenders. Additionally, it supports the use of public safety tools like bail and pretrial detention, aids in acquiring resources to combat drug and fentanyl crimes, and facilitates the detention and deportation of illegal aliens who have committed criminal offenses. Other uses include eliminating investigatory backlogs to process criminal evidence more quickly and combating interstate child trafficking. The funding for this program is derived from a rescission of unobligated balances from a previous act, with $500,000,000 appropriated for fiscal year 2026, available until September 30, 2030. Notably, the bill mandates that the Attorney General redirect funds previously appropriated for diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives established under Executive Order 14035 to carry out this new grant program. Grant recipients are required to maintain records for accountability and audit purposes, ensuring proper use of the funds.
