The Suicide Prevention Act establishes two key programs to combat self-harm and suicide across the nation. It authorizes a new initiative to expand and intensify the syndromic surveillance of self-harm behaviors by awarding grants to State, local, Tribal, and territorial public health departments. Grantees will share real-time, disaggregated data with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to track self-harm, inform prevention programs for at-risk populations, and support research. Priority for these grants will be given to areas with high rates of nonfatal suicidal behavior, including Indian Tribes, and those with extensive emergency department coverage, while also ensuring geographic distribution. The bill also creates a grant program for hospital emergency departments to provide crucial self-harm and suicide prevention services. These grants will enable hospitals to implement protocols for screening patients , offering immediate short-term prevention services , and making referrals for long-term care and follow-up after discharge. Funds can also be utilized for hiring and training clinical social workers and mental health professionals to deliver these services effectively. The Secretary will develop specific standards of practice for patient screening, and both the surveillance and hospital grant programs require regular reporting to Congress on their activities and effectiveness. Each program is authorized to receive $30,000,000 annually for fiscal years 2026 through 2030.
