Wildfires in the United States have grown in scale, complexity, and severity, with fire seasons lengthening and costs exceeding billions annually. Human activity causes nearly 85 percent of wildland fires, and smoke exposure poses significant health risks to firefighters and the public. Therefore, proactive planning, mitigation, and risk reduction are essential to counteract increasing wildfire threats and damage. To address this, the resolution designates May 2025 as "National Wildfire Preparedness Month." It encourages increased awareness and preparedness efforts by Federal, State, local, and Tribal governments, as well as nongovernmental organizations and communities. The resolution also supports educational initiatives that communicate preventative measures such as home hardening , land management practices, early warning systems, reducing human ignitions, and safe evacuation to enhance community fire resilience.
