This resolution expresses the sense of the House of Representatives that a National Garifuna Immigrant Heritage Month should be established in April. The Garifuna people, descendants of West and Central Africans who intermarried with Indigenous Caribs and Arawaks, arrived in Central America in 1797. Their language, dance, and music are recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Establishing this heritage month aims to highlight their rich cultural traditions and raise awareness about their ongoing fight for land rights and against injustices faced by Black and Indigenous populations globally.
