This House Resolution expresses the sense that the United States must urgently address the political and economic dominance of billionaire oligarchs, which it views as a grave threat to democracy and individual freedoms. It asserts that over the past 50 years, the Federal Government has allowed the wealthy to amass outsized power, leading to significant income and wealth inequality. The resolution highlights how this concentration of wealth, exemplified by the combined assets of 900 billionaires exceeding that of the poorest 50 percent of households, has corrupted U.S. politics through campaign contributions and exploitation of monopoly control. To counter this, the resolution calls for several actions by the President and Congress. These include defunding oligarchs by denying contracts to those engaged in corrupt schemes or violating labor/environmental laws, and protecting election integrity through public financing. It also advocates for breaking up concentrations of economic and political power , especially monopolies in media, finance, and tech, and drastically reducing economic inequality through increased taxes on corporations and the ultrarich, including a wealth tax. Furthermore, it urges investment in universal healthcare, affordable housing, and education, while also supporting the expansion of unions and promoting alternative, noncorporate ownership models to build a more democratic economy.
