SERVE Act

This bill, known as the "Safeguarding Ethics and Restoring Voter Expectations Act" or "SERVE Act," significantly strengthens post-employment restrictions for former Members of Congress. It amends existing law to extend the period during which former Senators are prohibited from lobbying Congress from two years to ten years . Similarly, the lobbying ban for former Members and officers of the House of Representatives is increased from one year to ten years . Furthermore, the bill introduces a new prohibition, preventing former Members of Congress from accepting compensation as a Federal contractor for a ten-year period after leaving office. These changes apply to individuals who leave office on or after the bill's enactment date, aiming to reduce potential undue influence and conflicts of interest in government contracting and lobbying activities.
