This legislation mandates the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to conduct a periodic review of the automatic maximum coverage amounts for the Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) and Veterans' Group Life Insurance (VGLI) programs. Starting January 1, 2026, and every five years thereafter, the Secretary will assess how current coverage compares to an inflation-adjusted benchmark. This benchmark is calculated by multiplying $500,000 by the average percentage change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) over the preceding five fiscal years. The purpose of this review is to ensure that insurance benefits offered to servicemembers and veterans maintain their purchasing power relative to economic changes. The findings will be submitted to Congress to guide future administrative decisions on potential coverage increases.
