Despite facing extreme violence, including beatings and firebombings, these activists, trained in nonviolent resistance, persevered in their mission. Their courageous actions ultimately led to a Federal order from the Interstate Commerce Commission in November 1961, banning segregation at all interstate public facilities based on race, color, or creed. Following its presentation, the gold medal will be given to the Smithsonian Institution for display and research, with a recommendation for it to be displayed at locations associated with the Freedom Riders.
