This bill authorizes the award of a Congressional Gold Medal to the Freedom Riders, collectively, in recognition of their profound contributions to the Civil Rights Movement. This honor acknowledges their pivotal role in inspiring a revolutionary movement for equality in interstate travel, directly challenging the rigid system of racial segregation prevalent in the 1960s. The Freedom Riders, beginning in 1961, embarked on journeys through the South to defy Jim Crow laws and enforce the Supreme Court's ruling against segregated bus and rail stations. Despite facing extreme violence, including beatings and firebombings, these activists, trained in nonviolent resistance, persevered in their mission. Their courageous actions ultimately led to a Federal order from the Interstate Commerce Commission in November 1961, banning segregation at all interstate public facilities based on race, color, or creed. Following its presentation, the gold medal will be given to the Smithsonian Institution for display and research, with a recommendation for it to be displayed at locations associated with the Freedom Riders. The Secretary of the Treasury is authorized to strike and sell duplicate bronze medals to the public, with proceeds supporting the United States Mint Public Enterprise Fund.
