Updated: Jun 25, 2026

Summary

This bill temporarily expands the authorized uses of grants awarded under the Veterans Legacy Program of the National Cemetery Administration. During a specified period, entities receiving these grants may assist the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in locating, identifying, and interring unclaimed or abandoned human remains suspected to belong to veterans. This expanded authority begins on the date of enactment and concludes on the last day of the second fiscal year thereafter. Importantly, any amounts used for these new purposes must not be requested as additional funds beyond what is already intended for the Veterans Legacy Program in annual budget requests.
