Federal Cryptocurrency Theft Enforcement and Coordination Act

This legislation establishes the Federal Cryptocurrency Theft Task Force within the Department of Justice, chaired by the Attorney General, to combat the rising frequency and sophistication of cryptocurrency theft and related digital asset crimes. Comprising senior representatives from key federal agencies like the FBI and Department of Homeland Security, the Task Force will operate consistent with federal criminal statutes.

Its core mission is to serve as the primary federal coordinating body for the prevention, investigation, and prosecution of cryptocurrency theft, improving coordination among federal law enforcement agencies. The Task Force will develop and disseminate best practices for evidence collection and asset tracing, while also providing crucial technical assistance and training to State and local law enforcement.

It will also facilitate information sharing, coordinate with international partners, and identify challenges in current enforcement authorities, reporting suggestions for reform to Congress. The Attorney General will submit annual reports detailing the Task Force's activities, emerging threats, and recommendations for strengthening enforcement; notably, the Act clarifies it does not authorize cryptocurrency regulation, expand regulatory authority, create new criminal offenses, or establish any private right of action.
