Gun Violence Prevention and Public Safety Database Act of 2026

The "Gun Violence Prevention and Public Safety Database Act of 2026" directs the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to establish a publicly accessible online database. This database will compile research related to gun violence in the United States, serving as a centralized resource for data and analysis to inform prevention efforts. Its creation is mandated within one year of the Act's enactment.

The CDC Director must publish clear criteria for research inclusion, requiring studies to present original analysis, systematic reviews, or data-driven findings with transparent methodologies and data sources. Research must be published in peer-reviewed journals, issued by government agencies, or produced by organizations with established review processes. Furthermore, the database will ensure transparency by disclosing authoring entities and any funding sources for the included research.

The database will incorporate research from several critical data systems, including the

• National Violent Death Reporting System
• National Electronic Injury Surveillance System-All Injury Program

, among others. It mandates that the CDC update the database every six months to ensure the information remains current and relevant. The bill explicitly authorizes federal funds from the Department of Health and Human Services, including the CDC and NIH, for gun violence research and appropriates $5,000,000 annually from fiscal years 2026 through 2030 to carry out this Act.
