VA Emergency Transportation Act

This bill seeks to amend title 38, United States Code, to broaden the scope of reimbursement for veterans' emergency medical care. It primarily modifies Section 1725 by replacing the term "emergency treatment" with the more inclusive phrase "emergency services" throughout the statute, signifying an expansion of covered benefits.

A key provision of the bill is the explicit definition of "emergency services" to include both emergency treatment and "emergency transportation." This newly defined "emergency transportation" specifically covers the conveyance of a veteran by ambulance or air ambulance, when provided by a non-Department provider. Reimbursement would be authorized for such transportation under two distinct scenarios:

• to a facility for the purpose of receiving emergency treatment; or
• from a non-Department facility, where emergency treatment was initially received, to a Department or other Federal facility.

These amendments are designed to ensure that veterans receive financial coverage not only for the medical care itself but also for the essential costs of emergency transport, particularly when transitioning to a Federal healthcare system facility.
