Gun Safety Innovation Opportunity Act of 2026

This bill establishes the Gun Safety Technology Grant Program, authorizing the Attorney General to provide funding to institutions of higher education and firearms manufacturers. The primary goal of these grants is to support the research and development of advanced safe firearm storage devices, including those utilizing biometric data to prevent unauthorized access or firing of a weapon. This initiative aims to enhance public safety by promoting innovative solutions for secure firearm storage.

Grant recipients will also analyze consumer attitudes and develop strategies to increase the adoption of these new technologies, ultimately making them more accessible and affordable. The bill authorizes an appropriation of $10,000,000 annually for fiscal years 2027 through 2030 to fund these efforts. Furthermore, the Attorney General is mandated to report to Congress on how to further assist technology development, how law enforcement can deploy such innovations, and how these devices can prevent self-harm and suicide attempts.
