Southeastern Rail Technologies Mapping Act of 2026

This legislation mandates the Administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), acting through the Office of Research, Data, and Innovation, to undertake a comprehensive study. The primary objective of this study is to explore methods for improving rail performance and facilitating the integration of new rail power technologies within the southeastern United States.

Specifically, the study must identify segments of the rail corridor stretching between Florida and Washington, DC that are suitable for advanced technologies such as rail electrification, fuel cells, or battery power. It also requires the identification of any significant challenges associated with implementing these innovative technologies across the designated corridor.

For any rail segment where the Administrator determines these new technologies cannot be implemented, the study must provide a clear explanation for that determination. Furthermore, it must recommend necessary updates to make such segments suitable for these technologies, including an estimated cost for each proposed update.

Ultimately, the Administrator is required to submit a detailed report to Congress within 18 months of the Act's enactment, outlining the complete results and findings of this crucial study.
