This legislation, known as the CDBG-DR Automated Assessment Act , requires the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to proactively assess unmet community development needs in areas impacted by major disasters. The Secretary must initiate this assessment within 60 days of a presidential disaster declaration and continue it on a quarterly basis thereafter. Using available federal disaster and housing data, HUD will be tasked with evaluating damage to both housing and infrastructure within the affected regions. Furthermore, the assessment must identify critical shortages in affordable housing and broader economic recovery needs essential for community rebuilding. Finally, the bill mandates that the Secretary submit a comprehensive report to Congress detailing the analysis and pinpointing specific unmet needs that could be addressed through appropriations for the Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program and other related federal disaster assistance initiatives.
