Fostering TRUST Act of 2026

This legislation, known as the Fostering TRUST Act of 2026, amends title 38, United States Code, to establish new congressional notice requirements for the Department of Veterans Affairs. It directs the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to inform the Committees on Veterans' Affairs and relevant congressional representatives about any suicide or attempted suicide of a veteran that occurs within a VA facility or a facility of a non-Department community care provider. An initial notification, detailing the event and location, must be submitted within seven days of the incident. A more comprehensive notice is required within 60 days , providing available information about the veteran, such as their enrollment status, recent medical encounters, military service details, age, and various demographic data, while respecting privacy. This detailed report also confirms that the veteran's immediate family has been informed of eligible VA support. Crucially, both notices must include guidance designed to deter sensationalism, highlight warning signs, list VA resources like the Veterans Crisis Line , and offer information on lethal means safety.
