This legislation mandates the Director of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to create a program focused on sinkhole hazard identification . This program will involve studying both short-term and long-term mechanisms that contribute to sinkhole formation, including extreme weather events, drought-induced water management changes, and aquifer depletion. Its primary goal is to develop comprehensive maps that clearly depict zones with a greater risk of sinkhole development. To ensure accuracy, the USGS Director must utilize 3D elevation data collected under the National Landslide Preparedness Act when creating these maps. The Director is also required to review and update these maps at least once every five years, or more frequently if deemed necessary. Furthermore, a public website will be established and maintained to display these maps and other critical information, making it accessible for community planners and emergency managers.
