Forest Resources Accountability Act

This bill, titled the "Forest Resources Accountability Act," aims to protect critical winter wildlife habitat within a designated area of the White River National Forest in Colorado. It specifically prohibits the Secretary of Agriculture from approving or authorizing any new utility corridor or year-round road project, including the Berlaimont Estates Access Road, on specified federal land. The bill mandates that any necessary access to inholdings must be limited to existing, unpaved, and seasonal routes , governed by special use permits to ensure environmental protection. The legislation highlights concerns about reduced Forest Service staffing impacting hazardous fuels reduction, trail maintenance, and scientific research, emphasizing the need to prioritize projects addressing public needs like wildfire risk and wildlife habitat. To further its conservation goals, the bill directs the Secretary to pursue the acquisition of the 680-acre Berlaimont Estates parcel from willing sellers. This acquisition effort requires coordination with state and local entities, and if successful, the parcel would be incorporated into the White River National Forest for wildlife conservation and public enjoyment. The Secretary is also required to report on these acquisition efforts within 180 days of the Act's enactment.
