The "Making National Parks Safer Act" mandates the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the National Park Service, to conduct a comprehensive assessment of emergency communications centers within units of the National Park System. This assessment, to be completed within one year, will identify the current implementation status of Next Generation 9-1-1 systems , estimate the costs for purchasing and installing these systems where they are absent, and project the ongoing maintenance and operational expenses across all centers. Upon completion, a detailed report describing the assessment's results and identifying potential issues affecting implementation, such as jurisdictional or technological challenges, must be submitted to the appropriate congressional committees and made publicly available. Following the assessment report, the Secretary is required to develop a plan within one year for installing Next Generation 9-1-1 systems at identified emergency communications centers. This plan must be informed by the assessment's findings and developed in consultation with various entities, including state and local emergency operations officials to ensure interoperability , relevant state and local stakeholders, and federal agencies like the Department of Commerce, Department of Transportation, and the Federal Communications Commission. However, the plan is not required to address units where sufficient Next Generation 9-1-1 systems are already installed or in the process of being installed.
