This legislation, titled the Responsible Opportunity for Under-21 Trucking Engagement Act (ROUTE Act), aims to amend title 49 of the United States Code to permit certain drivers under the age of 21 to operate commercial motor vehicles in interstate commerce. An eligible driver is defined as an individual who is at least 18 but less than 21 years old and holds a commercial driver's license limited to intrastate operation. The bill allows these eligible drivers to operate commercial motor vehicles in interstate commerce within a 150 air-mile radius of their normal work reporting location. Strict conditions apply, including the requirement that the driver must return to their work reporting location and be released from work within 14 consecutive hours of departing. Furthermore, drivers must have at least 10 consecutive hours off duty separating each on-duty period, and their normal work reporting location must remain in the state where their intrastate commercial driver's license was issued.
