This legislation, known as the Transportation Assistance for Olympic and World Cup Cities Act of 2025 , aims to support State, Tribal, and local efforts in addressing transportation challenges associated with hosting international sporting events in the United States. It defines "covered events" as multiday international sporting competitions, including Olympic, Paralympic, Special Olympics, and FIFA Men's and Women's World Cup events, that are not regularly held at the host site. Multiple events occurring in the same general area are treated as a single covered event for the purposes of this assistance. The bill establishes a grant program, authorizing $50,000,000 annually, to fund eligible transportation projects and planning activities. These funds are allocated to host metropolitan planning organizations , with up to $10,000,000 per organization per event, and can be used by various eligible entities such as state and local governments, Indian Tribes, metropolitan planning organizations, intercity rail operators, and airport sponsors within a 100-mile radius of the event. Additionally, the Secretary of Transportation will provide technical and planning assistance, including help with intermodal transportation plans and coordinating efforts, but funds cannot be used for bidding on events. Assistance is limited to a period beginning five years before and ending 30 days after the covered event.
