This bill, known as the Medical Nutrition Therapy Act of 2025, seeks to significantly expand the availability of medical nutrition therapy (MNT) services under the Medicare program. Currently, Medicare Part B limits MNT coverage to beneficiaries diagnosed with diabetes or renal disease. The proposed legislation broadens this scope to encompass a wide array of chronic conditions, including prediabetes, obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, malnutrition, eating disorders, cancer, gastrointestinal diseases, HIV, AIDS, and cardiovascular disease , with provisions for the Secretary to add more conditions. Additionally, the bill expands the types of healthcare professionals authorized to refer patients for MNT services. Beyond physicians, referrals would be permitted from physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and clinical nurse specialists . For individuals with eating disorders, clinical psychologists would also be authorized to make referrals. These amendments are designed to enhance access to MNT for a greater number of Medicare beneficiaries and will apply to services furnished two years after the Act's enactment.
Referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, and in addition to the Committee on Ways and Means, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
