NOAA Data Preservation Act

The NOAA Data Preservation Act aims to safeguard critical data sets managed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) by ensuring their continuous and uninterrupted storage. This legislation places specific restrictions on the Secretary of Commerce regarding the cancellation of contracts with cloud service providers responsible for hosting NOAA data. Specifically, the Secretary of Commerce is prohibited from terminating such a contract unless two key conditions are met. First, a comprehensive plan must be developed to guarantee the uninterrupted storage of the data set, including a seamless transition to an alternative cloud service provider. Second, the Secretary must collaborate with the Administrator of NOAA to ensure the continuous protection of these vital data sets throughout the transition process, thereby preventing any loss or disruption of access.
