This bill, titled the MACV-SOG Congressional Gold Medal Act , aims to award a Congressional Gold Medal to the service members of the Military Assistance Command Vietnam-Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG). Established in January 1964, MACV-SOG was a dedicated joint military task force that conducted high-risk and special activities in denied areas of North Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Their operations included deep-penetration reconnaissance, sabotage, rescue missions, and psychological operations, setting standards for modern special operations forces. The medal is intended to recognize their bravery and outstanding service , which remained largely unacknowledged for decades due to the covert nature of their missions. MACV-SOG created battlefield effects disproportionate to its small size, significantly impacting North Vietnamese logistics and troop deployment. Following its presentation by the Speaker of the House and the President pro tempore of the Senate, the gold medal will be given to the Smithsonian Institution for display and research, with a congressional sense that it should also be displayed at other MACV-SOG-associated locations. The Secretary of the Treasury is authorized to strike and sell bronze duplicates of the medal.
Referred to the Committee on Financial Services, and in addition to the Committee on House Administration, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
